Dearly Devoted to Darkly Dreaming Dexter

Sunday night is the season 3 premiere of Dexter and what better way to celebrate everyone’s favourite serial killer than with ribs?! For those unfortunate souls out there who are not familiar with the TV show Dexter, it’s based on books by Jeff Lindsay and stars Michael C. Hall as a blood spatter analyst who works for the Miami Metro Police Department by day but is a serial killer by night. An awkwardly charming and wonderful serial killer though, who only kills other serial killers. You may be skeptical upon hearing the premise of the show, but please trust me on this one, it’s amazing. I rarely get hooked on TV shows but I’m hopelessly addicted to Dexter. The writing is smart and funny and the show is perfectly cast.

Of course, like many things, I never would have found it on my own and for the first two seasons I had to rely on the kindness of others to let me watch Dexter at their house with cable or endure the wait time and lackluster quality of downloaded Dexter. This season is going to be different though because I’ve finally got the proper channel to watch Dexter on the big screen and it’s going to be glorious. I need to recruit others to watch with me though because it’s as great as Dexter is, the show is even better with friends who love it as much as I do. Because at least then they’ll understand when I say things like “Surprise motherf***er!”

Coca-Cola BBQ Sauce

½ can coke

¾ cups ketchup

1 small onion, finely chopped

1/8 cup cider vinegar

1/8 cup Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon mustard powder

1 teaspoon salt

A few shakes of hot sauce

In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer, stirring occasionally until the sauce has thickened. Strain if desired. Makes enough for 2 racks of ribs, which I rubbed with whatever spices were in my cupboard, smoked and then bbq’d for 5 hours. During the last hour I basted the ribs with the BBQ sauce every 15 minutes.

Love that picture you created! I'm not sure I want to see the new Dexter. I mean, what else can they do with th show? And, no Doakes? I'm worried for season 3.

Those look like killer ribs. ;) I've never watched Dexter, poor soul that I am. I guess I've got one too many TV shows to watch already! Perhaps I'll get hooked on it in syndication.

Hee! And you made sure that the first pic had a giant knife too! With a pool of... sauce ;) Mmmm.... Ribs...

We get Dexter here, but a few seconds out of the really bloody scenes are censored. I'm not sure I'd want it any other way O_o But it is a must-watch potato-chip show for me :)

Another Dexter fan here, but without Showtime, I have to catch up with it on DVD. Don't give away any Season 3 secrets!

Love Dexter! Sadly, I have to wait for the CTV version or rent it - no movie channel for us.
As a fellow Canadian Food Blogger I wanted to tell you about my recent post with a list of 100 Canadian Foods to Consume.

Enjoy!

Ooh those ribs look fantastic! Does it taste anything like coke though? I haven't drank that stuff since i was 15.

What a morbid show- i'm off to search for episodes of it on the internet right after i post this. Thanks for recommendation! :)

Wow, Dexter huh? I tried watching the first episode but got totally creeped out, he is just too good of an actor! But I wager you'll say I should give it another shot... maybe I will?

Clever post! Even if I haven't been watching Dexter the theme made me smile.

Delicious ribs. What a perfect snack while watching a serial killer show. It's fun to have a group who appreciates the same show and can get together to make it an occasion.

I love Dexter! My friend got me hooked on it when he bought the first two seasons. Unfortunately I don't have cable though so I will have to wait until season 3 comes out on DVD! :(

BTW your ribs look really yummy!

I need to start watching television. I've never heard of the show, but I'll be looking for it.
And I can't help but wonder if the star of the show has already stumbled onto your bloody-awesome entry.

Dexter would be proud of you! Great recipe and awesome photograpic styling. We're still on season 2 here in NZ. I stumbled on the show by accident but both hubby and I like it enough to make a point of watching it.
